If you can get into a server where people agree to play on teams (eg. Aliens vs. Marines), it's heaps different.
A lone Marine is pretty vulnerable, as is a lone Alien. But get them in coordinated groups, and its awesome.
I was playing with 2 other Marines (one of which was a bit noob, but the other was good). We'd watch different sectors as we moved, and then when one of us fired on an enemy, the others brought their fire to bear too. Also, if one of us died from a rush attack, the other two immediately smashed the Alien/Pred. Shows why in multiplayer it'll be important to pick of Marine stragglers rather than attack a group.
I was playing 1v1 last night. I was a Predator and the other guy was an Alien. I had the Disc and the Plasma Caster and won 19-1. He just couldn't get close to me (Preds want to engage Aliens at range and Marines up close). But if he had a buddy or two to attack me from the other side simultaneously, I'd have been in big trouble.
Goose, have you had much of a run with the Pred yet? Takes a bit to get used to, but is good fun when you get the hang of it. Thought it might appeal to your "jump out of the bathrooms with a shotgun" ambush mentality
. I'm still getting used to the Aliens movement, it still disorients me a little.
Also, I have to say that the game really isn't as gory as the trailer I posted earlier suggested it was. Sure it can have it's moments, but there's not nearly as much terrible decapitation and stuff. Those moves only get pulled off from the front of an enemy, and most people won't do that, they'll attack from behind. There are a few things like the Pred stabbing it's claws through a Marine, but it's actually pretty tame compared to the trailer. Or maybe I'm just desensitised. What do you think Goose?
I can't speak for singleplayer, but multi just doesn't seem that bad.
Only reason I mention it is because Hairy said that the violence was a turn off for him, so it might have interested him to know.

If only it diddnt have Aliens in it.

My logical data analysis sector indicates that would be highly unlikely. And my bullshit meter agrees.

The violence in it was minimum (or so I thought), I didn't even give it a second thought.

New trailer.
Nothing new, but looks kinda cool and also outlines all of the multiplayer modes.

Very good review here from Angry Joe:
http://angryjoeshow.com/?p=6514
The video review is a long one (about 15 minutes), but I think he's gotten it pretty spot on. Everything except his issues with the graphics (I think they look great).
Not sure if anyone is interested, but I think it's worth a watch for anyone even considering picking it up.

breezy I downloaded it twice... first time I didn't like it. Then seeing Wraith and Mongoose playing it heaps I downloaded it again... I still don't like it and deleted it for a second time.
Loved the first one in it's day but it's not for me now.
Wraith and Mongoose are on it most nights and in Vent... drop in and ask them tonight.

Be aware that the Steam forums are full of the biggest bunch of whingers I've ever seen for most games (not just AvP). Noone posts there with good stuff, only to complain about things being overpowered (which isn't true really), or the fact that dedicated servers haven't rolled out yet, or various other inane issues. A lot of the crap they moan about is supposed to be addressed in the next few weeks when the dedicated server software rolls out (fingers crossed).
Like I said before, it's really an acquired taste, because it's
very
different to anything else you might have played. It's no straight up run and gun like BF or CoD. Marines have to be permanently scared and wary (me and Goose trying to defend a domination point surrounded by high walls in the dark against 2 Aliens last night was way to stressful, so we bailed and defended the other two points instead
), Aliens need to be super stealthy, use the walls, ceilings and shadows and be really sly and the Preds have to be careful and take advantage of high ground.
It's hard to explain, but if people play it like a normal FPS, they'll hate it. If you're after that kind of thing, I'd stay clear.
Not sure if there are still people playing it, but maybe give the demo a shot if you're not sure. But I think most people who would still be playing the demo would've bought the full version by now.
Might be a better bet to wait until dedicated servers are released to see if the issues with matchmaking are fixed before buying it though.
Goose might have a different opinion though.
If you're about, drop onto vent in the evening sometime. Like Calm said, me and Goose are on most nights having a few games together.
